Shenandoah River Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution

The Shenandoah River Chapter was organized October 10, 1986 in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with seventeen charter members and Pearl L. Womack as organizing regent.

The chapter took the name from the beautiful river that flows through the valley and between the towns of Shenandoah and Elkton.  The Shenandoah River has been the lifeblood of the Shenandoah Valley throughout our history.  Long before our ancestors looked down on the valley and the river that flowed through the land, the sparkling water of the Shenandoah River quenched the thirst of the Native American and the wildlife that sustained them.

The Shenandoah River became a mode of travel for the people and transportation for their industry.  The history of the valley grew with the small towns that lined the banks of the Shenandoah River.  The water from the river refreshed the people's bodies from the toll of the land and their souls through its beauty.  Just as the river was an important part of the history of our communities, it remains an important aspect of our futures.

The valley took its name from the beautiful river that flowed through it which the Native Americans called "Daughter of the Stars" and we Daughters proudly bear the name - SHENANDOAH RIVER CHAPTER, NSDAR.

Shenandoah High School Alumni Association

The Shenandoah High School Alumni Association has the distinction of being the longest continuing alumni association in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was formally organized in 1939 by the 28 graduates of that year assisted by Senior Sponsor, Mazine Karnes Grubbs, and Principal, E.R. Riedel.

The historic first alumni banquet was held in the spring of 1939 and included the earliest graduates from the first Shenandoah High School Class of 1911. Since 1939, the Association has met annually with the exception of a few years' suspension during World War II.

Accelerated growth in Association membership continued through the Class of 1961, after which Shenandoah High School ceased to exist due to regional consolidation. The 51 senior classes from 1911 to 1961 have produced 1,089 graduates. The Alumni Association membership remains active and enthusiastic in spirit with over 700 living alumni scattered across the United States.
