April 4, 2011 Shenandoah is Site for New Page Valley Cycling Bicycle Race Shenandoah Time Trial to Take Place on July 30 SHENANDOAH, VIRGINIA – The Page Valley Cycling bicycle club, along with the Shenandoah Merchants Association and Town of the Shenandoah, has announced plans to hold a new bicycle racing event in and around Shenandoah on Saturday, July 30; the weekend before the club’s popular “Tour of Page County,” consisting of the critically-acclaimed Page Valley Road Race near Stanley and the Luray Criterium. Called the Shenandoah Time Trial, this event represents a unique discipline whereby cyclists race against the clock for the best time. Rather than a mass start, individual competitors take off in 30 second increments. “We are proud to continue our commitment to Shenandoah with this event,” said Christopher Gould, promoter of the Shenandoah Time Trial on behalf of Page Valley Cycling. “In the past, Page Valley Cycling has provided monetary support for the bike trails at Bike Gem and this event continues our commitment to the town in support of cycling throughout Page County.” The Shenandoah Time Trial will take place on a course that begins downtown on Shenandoah Avenue near the intersection with Highway 340. From Shenandoah Avenue, racers will turn right on 9th Street; left on Osceola Avenue; left on 10th Street; and then right on Massanutten Avenue before heading out of town on Back Road; taking in a loop including Fleeburg Road, Naked Creek Road, and Loop Road before turning around and heading back into town again. As with other Page Valley Cycling events, the promoter is working closely with local officials, including the town police and county sheriff departments. “By working with Page Valley Cycling on this event, we will assure that the roads will be safe for cyclists and motorists alike with minimal impact on traffic flow, while showcasing our community to a wider audience,” said Clinton O. Lucas, Jr., Mayor of the Town of Shenandoah. While some roads along the course will be closed, and others will have limited access to in-town portions and motorists are cautioned to drive with care over the entire course while the race is in progress. There will be road guards at key intersections on the course, stopping and directing traffic as necessary. The event will begin at about 8 AM and will be completed by approximately 12:30, depending on the number of participants and their individual times. The promoter of the event has also been cooperating with the Shenandoah Merchant’s Association. “We’re excited about this race, and the Merchant’s Association is preparing plans for a day-long event on that day to encourage participants and their families to stay and enjoy the town’s hospitalities,” said Wayne Showalter, President of the Shenandoah Merchant’s Association.
