1) Held Shenandoah Wireless Broadband Authority meeting. Appointed the following Board of Directors: Chairman Richard Pierce; Vice Chairman Russell Comer, Jr.; Secretary/Treasurer Keith Sampson; Member Clinton O. Lucas, Jr.; and Member Constance Switzer.
2) Authorized approximately $100 to the Shenandoah Recreation League for the baskets they will be giving away in a fundraising bingo on February 27, 2010. Also, Chief Monteleone authorized $49 to have the police department sponsor a basket during the recreation league’s fundraising bingo.
3) Received an invitation to Congressman Cantor’s Fifth Annual Local Leaders Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, Virginia. RSVP’s are due by 2/3/2010.
4) Received information from VML/VACO regarding Legislative Day planned for February 11, 2010 in Richmond. Registration deadline is January 29, 2010.
5) Received the meeting schedule for the Page County Board of Supervisors. The three (3) meetings to be held at the Shenandoah Elementary School are as follows: April 20, 2010; July 20, 2010; and October 19, 2010.
6) Received an invitation to a luncheon on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Mimslyn Inn to Celebrate the Women of Page County. All proceeds benefit Choices and Grace House. Contact Page County Department of Recreation at 540-743-1180 or Page County Chamber of Commerce at 540-743-3915 for reservations. $20 pp
7) Received a thank you card from the Shenandoah Lions Club for the Town’s support of the 2009 Christmas Cheer boxes. 50 families were assisted with this program.
8) Received the Winter 2010 Town Newsletter, which is loaded with great information. Thanked Grants Administrator Judy Jewell for publishing, coping and mailing the Town newsletter each quarter.
9) Heard the recent flooding caused some overflow at the sewer treatment plant. Heard the Town will discuss funding at the budget workshops to find the leaks and begin sleeving some of the lines to prevent inflow and infiltration at the sewer plant. The Town will also discuss funding to extend the sewer line to areas on Tenth Street and Massanutten Avenue due to private septic tank overflows in these areas.
10) Heard the Town will rent a chipper to clean up the brush from trees on Third Street and also on the land for the proposed Veteran’s Memorial Park.
11) Agreed to hold purchasing the second police vehicle until the next meeting to ensure Rural Broadband Network Services continues to pay the Town under the contract.
12) Monthly budget reports for December 2009 were received for review.
13) Parks and Recreation News: River Park - The river park flooded, but the Town only lost two (2) trash cans in the flood waters; James Madison University Crew Club’s new dock was not damaged in the flooding and they should finish it soon.; Big Gem Park – The bicycle trail work is almost done and should be open to the public very soon. Some picnic tables are missing the name plate of the donors and they will be replaced soon; Skate Park – Gate is to be unlocked each morning by 7 a.m. and locked each evening.
14) Heard the Industrial, Economic Development and Procurement Committee supports a seminar to teach local business owners ways to utilize technology in promotion and operation of their businesses. Town Council authorized after hours use of the computer center for this seminar. Gary Patterson agreed to donate his time to organize and help teach the seminar topics related to business technology. The seminar will likely take place in early spring. Businesses holding a Town of Shenandoah license could attend the seminar without charge and businesses out of Town could attend the seminar for a nominal fee.
15) Council Members will submit a list of items they feel should be in the Town Capital Improvements Plan. Once a full list is compiled, it will be turned over to the Planning Commission for review and comment.
16) Requested Town notify local TV and radio stations when Town Hall is closed due to inclement weather. Notifications will be sent to WHSV TV3; WSVA Radio; WMXH/WRAA Radio.
17) Heard Project Firewood, which is a program to assist the needy with firewood, has been cancelled for this weekend and rescheduled for February 13, 2010 and February 14, 2010. Call Shenandoah Hardware Store at 652-6500 to volunteer or if questions.
18) Heard volunteer Bruce Arnold, who has always taught classes at the Shenandoah Computer Center, is now also donating the materials for his classes. Council thanked him for his volunteer services to the community.
