Second Masive Fire Strikes Shenandoah in 10 months

March 27, 2007 at 2:21am an alarm goes out to the Shenandoah Volunteer Fire Company for a Structure Fire on First Street. Engine 702 arrives on the scene finding heavy fire showing and quickly calls for a 3rd alarm. Chief Lester Hensley takes command of the fire and calls for dual 5 inch supply lines to be laid to the river for water supply, due to the amount of heavy fire. Several structures were involved; 3 being a complete loss, 3 other structures were damaged by heat, 1 structure damaged by water. Members were on the scene until noon cooling hot spots. Companies assisting were Elkton, Stanley, Luray, McGaheysvile, Grottoes, Wyers Cave, Harrisonburg City, Harrisonburg Volunteer, Shenandoah Rescue, Shenandoah Police and Page County Sheriff's Office.

On February 9th around Midnight the Shenandoah Fire Company responded to JJ's Restaurant North of Town for a Chimney Fire. It was found to be a faulty furnace, the situation was under control within 15 minutes. Icy conditions on the roof caused some problems with the fire extinguishment. Air temperature was around 12 degrees. Shenandoah Rescue 1 and the Shenandoah Police Dept. also assisted.

On February 8th at 11:35am the Shenandoah Fire Company was dispatched to a Structure Fire in the Dovel Hollow area of Stanley to assist the Stanley Fire Company. E-704 responded to the scene, on arrival the Engine crew relieved the crew in the interior of the structure. Crews were on the scene for around 4 hours. Cold temperatures and the building construction made efforts difficult to extinguish the fire. Photos courtesy of FF Seal

 

A Massive fire hit the Town of Shenandoah on May 23, 2006 . It is said that this is the biggest fire in the town within the last 100 years. The Shenandoah Vlonteer Fire Company was assisted by over 7 area Departments. Shenandoah firefighters were on the scene for over 18 hours. Two stores were destroyed by the fire; Comers Hardware and Letter Perfect, an apartment building was also destroyed. These buildings will be greatly be missed. Our prayers are with them.
